Bam Adebayo Is Better Than His Box Score
Bam Adebayo does not need to lead the league in scoring or rebounding to control what Miami can do defensively.
Defense is a responsibility, not just a total
Blocks and steals record the end of certain defensive plays. They do not record every switch survived, action disrupted, rotation communicated, or matchup that an offense decided not to attack. Adebayo’s value begins with the range of assignments Miami can give him.
He can defend near the rim, move onto smaller players, show high against a ball handler, recover, and serve as the communicator behind teammates. That versatility gives a coaching staff more options. It also makes his impact difficult to reduce to one column in a box score.
The accomplishments support the argument
Adebayo became a full-time starter during Miami’s run to the 2020 NBA Finals. He remained central to the team that returned to the Finals in 2023. His defensive work has been recognized repeatedly: four consecutive All-Defensive Second Team selections from 2019-20 through 2022-23, followed by First Team recognition in 2023-24. He was again selected to the Second Team for 2025-26.
Awards do not prove every possession, but that sustained recognition matches the role Miami has trusted him to perform across different rosters and postseason runs.
His offensive value is also broader than points
Adebayo screens, creates handoff actions, makes decisions from the middle of the floor, rebounds, and can punish certain matchups as a scorer. He is not the same offensive engine as the league’s highest-volume stars. That is exactly why comparing only PPG misses the shape of his value.
To evaluate him fairly, I want to ask what lineups and schemes remain possible because he is on the floor. That question captures more than counting statistics while remaining connected to observable basketball responsibilities.
Underrated does not mean flawless
There are nights when Miami needs more aggressive scoring from him, and there are offensive limitations worth discussing. Calling a player underrated should not turn into pretending weaknesses do not exist. It means his complete impact is greater than the first numbers many fans use to judge him.
